Focus of the Month for June
Devotion/ Eka Pada Rajakapotasana
On the burning (tapasic) heels of Hanuman's great leap, our philosophical focus this month will be devotion. What are you devoted to? Your family, teacher, partner? Your art? This concept comes up in the sutras of Patanjali, in Tantric philosophy, Buddhism, not to mention all the other major religions. What does devotion really mean to you? And what's more, is what you are devoted to working for you? Really and truly helping you grow, showing you the way? All to be considered this month. Here is a month to deeply consider and reflect on what is beneath the surface.
Like last month, we will need a healthy dose of devotion and patience to begin to practice king pigeon (eka pada rajakapotasana). A great big backbend that in its full expression requires opening the shoulder girdle as well. As in the two previous months, we will sequentially build a solid technical foundation to have the courage to try this beautiful pose.
“The kings of the earth in their earthly capitals are not as happy as are the lords of the cities of their own bodies, and the masters of their own minds." YOGA VASISHTA
Advanced Workshop
with Carla Stangenberg
June 6, 5:45 - 8:15 pm
Please join us for this adventurous ride into advanced asana, pranayama, and meditation practices, as well as philosophy. We will work on hip opening, which should help us prepare for the month of eka pada rajakapotasana. Philosophically we will delve into the meanings of the niyama isvara pranidhana and perhaps if we listen closely enough we will be able to really get a sense of it.

Jaya Yoga BOOK CLUB
"Eat foods your great-grandmother would have eaten."
The book this time is In Defense of Food, by Michael Pollan. Pick it up and start reading. The meeting is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, at 3:15 pm. We are taking the club outdoors! This meeting will be in the park, so bring a blanket to sit on. We will meet at the southwest entrance to the park at Bartell-Pritchard Square. (If it is raining, the meeting will be held the following week.) We will be joined by Jaya Yoga student Ava Chin, aka the Urban Forager, who will lead us around the park after we discuss the book to show us the bounty of foods in the park itself. Bring a bag for collecting.
"Eat nothing that bears a health or nutritional claim." (both quotes from In Defense of Food)
