Focus of the Month for September
Manomaya Kosha and Vijnanamaya Kosha / Standing on Feet
"You cannot hope to experience inner peace or freedom without understanding the workings of your mind and of human consciousness in general. All behavior both constructive and destructive is dependent on our thoughts."
BKS Iyengar - Ch. 5 Light on Life

The focus of the month for September is two part. First, we will consider the manomaya kosha (the "mental body") and vijnanamaya kosha (the "intellectual body") as they are outlined in chapters four and five of our reference book for this month, Iyengar's Light on Life. As the month passes we will get a better understanding of these koshas and how affect us, according to yoga philosophy.

The practice of "standing on feet" provides us with a physical focus in which we will consider the anatomy of the foot as it relates to standing poses as well as other asanas. For example, how does the alignment of the foot effect the knee exactly? Does the alignment of the foot have any bearing at all in a pose like ankle to knee or sirsasana? Come to class to let your teachers' collected intelligence guide you and of course to ask questions.

Welcome Home!!
I just want to take a moment to welcome everyone who has been away back to Jaya. Each and every one of you are very important to the health and vitality of the life of this Sangha (community). All of your teachers look forward to sharing what they have learned over the summer.

With that, we are adding a new component to the monthly newsletter: A story from life off the mat. Please enjoy. We know there are a lot of writers in our midst, so we welcome and encourage you to submit a story of your own! (namaste@jayayogacenter.com).

Now we settle in from the heat of the past summer months back into our days full of the anticipation of autumn and what it might hold for us. I've seen kids packed up trudging down the street with colorful back packs, new high speed sneakers, full of dreams, and the parents grinning from ear to ear, breathing a sigh of relief as they kiss and release their child's little hands.

Something of an effortless, natural reflection takes place at this time of year as the season change touches the mental body.

A few days ago I went for a walk with my sister and two friends. Just a walk, not like the challenging hike of the previous day, in which I had felt a slight tinge of guilt at having possibly tricked them into hoofing it straight up the side of a small mountain without letting them know what they were in for. They told me later if they had known what was ahead of them they might have taken out the picket signs. "Ignorance is bliss," my sister's friend Diane recited with a smile beneath her Boston accent.

This walk had none of the heart pounding, breath catching, falling on ones be-hind excitement of the day before. How we made it to this trail head also bore little resemblance to the previous day. Our minds had been set on the quad killer, but some where along the line we made a wrong turn and happened upon our trail by accident. We found ourselves at the side of a still, reflective pond looking at a crude diagram that seemed to indicate that we could walk around it, though we weren't quite sure. We accepted our fate that this would be our route for the day. Preconceived ideas can be way overrated. Off we all went with little knowledge of the trail ahead except that it would not be at a 90 degree angle. We followed our silent guide: plastic green diamonds nailed to a tree ever 200 yards or so with the words "Nature Conservancy." We had no idea how long this was going to take. We just walked, pleased to know we were not going up.

I looked at the four of us walking as a kind of one. We collectively opened to our surroundings -- each berry, deer track, late August wild flower something of a fascination. We felt open, perhaps awe struck, and gleefully happy because we were not trudging up the side of Stissing mountain. As we rounded the pond we encountered a two foot wide boardwalk allowing explorers to get up to the boggy edges of the pond without donning high rubber pants with suspenders. We got to explore with open senses, up close, the life of the (still not sure how big) pond: its naturally reflective quality and the life of a multitude of creatures buzzing around.

On and off the boardwalk we continued. “Maybe we should turn around now,” said one, and we were one, so if one said it we were all thinking it. But if we turned around now we might be just 50 feet away from the completion of the trail around the pond, if in fact that was what we were on.

So here we are back in Brooklyn, having made wonderful mistakes that led us to see what we might not have seen at all if we had allowed ourselves to be led by preconceived thoughts in the head. That journey would have only brought us to the end of the thoughts themselves, not the edge of mystery.

We at Jaya look forward to exploring more of the terrain of the body and mind with you; call the other aspect what you wish. We are deeply grateful for your practice and presence in this community.
Warm Regards,
Carla Stangenberg
